Everything people ask us about servicing, repairs, filters, AMCs and choosing a purifier, plus a simple guide to reading your water.
Servicing
How often should an RO purifier be serviced?
For most homes, every 3 to 6 months. Borewell, tanker or very hard water clogs pre-filters faster, so service may be needed more often.
How often should filters and the membrane be changed?
As a general guide, sediment and carbon filters every 6 to 12 months and the RO membrane every 1 to 3 years. Water quality and daily use make the biggest difference.
What happens during a routine service?
Filters are inspected and cleaned or replaced, the membrane is flushed, the tank is sanitised, fittings are checked for leaks, and input and output TDS are measured. See RO servicing.
My purifier light is on. Does that mean the water is fine?
Not necessarily. A purifier can keep running with exhausted filters or a worn membrane. A TDS check and a look at the filters is the only way to be sure.
Repairs
Why is my purifier giving very little water?
The most common causes are choked pre-filters, a worn membrane or a weak booster pump. Low inlet pressure from the overhead tank can also be a factor.
Why does the water taste salty or bad?
Usually an exhausted carbon filter or a membrane that is no longer rejecting salts well. A TDS controller set too high can also change the taste.
Is it safe to keep using a leaking purifier?
Close the inlet valve and unplug it, especially if water is near the electrical parts, then book a repair.
Do you repair all brands?
We work on most common domestic purifiers. Tell us the brand and model when booking.
Buying a purifier
Do I need an RO purifier?
RO is needed mainly when TDS is high, typically above about 500 mg/L, or when the water comes from a borewell or tanker. Low-TDS municipal water can often be treated with UV + UF. See the water guide below.
What is the difference between mineral and alkaline purifiers?
Both are RO purifiers with an extra stage after purification. A mineral cartridge adds calcium and magnesium back mainly for taste; an alkaline cartridge also raises the pH slightly. See our guides to mineral RO and alkaline purifiers.
How much storage capacity do I need?
For drinking and cooking, a family of four typically uses 15 to 25 litres a day. A 7 to 10 litre tank with a good purification rate covers most homes.
AMC plans
What is an AMC?
An annual maintenance contract is a yearly plan that covers scheduled service visits and, depending on the plan, filter changes, parts and breakdown visits. See AMC plans.
Can I get an AMC for any purifier?
Usually, yes. We inspect the purifier first; worn major parts may need replacing before the plan starts.
How much does an AMC cost?
It depends on the purifier model and the plan.

Water guide
Reading your water
Two numbers tell you most of what you need to choose a purifier: TDS and hardness.
TDS (total dissolved solids)
Measured in mg/L (also shown as ppm) with an inexpensive TDS meter. Reference limits are from BIS IS 10500:2012, India’s drinking water standard.
| TDS (mg/L) | What it means | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Below 200 | Low dissolved solids | UV + UF with carbon |
| 200 – 500 | Within the BIS acceptable limit (500) | UV + UF, or RO with TDS controller for taste |
| 500 – 2,000 | Above acceptable; within the permissible limit where no other source exists | RO + UV, mineral or alkaline RO |
| Above 2,000 | Above the BIS permissible limit | RO with strong pre-treatment; check model ratings |
Hardness
Hardness (calcium and magnesium, as CaCO3) causes white scale on taps and kettles. BIS sets an acceptable limit of 200 mg/L and a permissible limit of 600 mg/L. RO reduces hardness in drinking water; whole-house scale needs a water softener.
What TDS does not tell you
Low TDS does not mean water is free of bacteria, and TDS meters cannot detect arsenic, nitrate or pesticides. If you are concerned, get a laboratory water test.
